PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-grade and high-fineness device which may be driven by a simple matrix driving method by impressing voltage to cause Frederick's transition in an initial state on liquid crystals into which a specific ratio of monomers are incorporated and photopolymerizing or thermally polymeriuzing the monomers by selecting a stable metastable state. SOLUTION: This display device is provided with a pair of transparent electrode substrates 5 provided with liquid crystal oriented films 2 and a liquid crystal layer contg. the monomers and chiral nematic liquid crystals is formed between these transparent electrode substrates 5. The chiral nematic liquid crystals have a twisted structure of a twist angleϕin the initial state and the monomers are incorporated at 1 to 5wt.% of the total weight of the liquid crystal layer. The voltage to cause the Frederick's transition in the initial state is impressed on the liquid crystals and the stabler metastable state of the two different metastable states in the relaxed state after the voltage impression is selected. The monomers are polymerized in this state to form a high polymer, by which the liquid crystal layer contg. the high polymer and the chiral nematic liquid crystals is held between the transparent electrode substrates 5.
