The folding base (3) for a signpost comprises a sleeve (4) for fixing the lower end of the post (2). The sleeve is fixed to the base, which is in two parts which form a cavity for taking ballast. The sleeve is pivoted about a horizontal axis (xx') relative to two parallel spaced walls (7a,7b) in the base. These walls are fixed to one of the base parts (3a,3b) and form with this part a groove (6). This part of the base has means of locking the sleeve in each of two positions. In its use position the sleeve projects vertically from the base. In its stored position it is included between the two walls on which it is pivoted with its longitudinal axis parallel to the base support face.
