摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the dependence on visual field angles and to make a contrast higher, electric power consumption lower and response speed higher by subjecting liquid crystals to an orientation treatment in parallel with the longitudinal direction of wire-shaped electrode parts and specifying the pretilt angle of a first substrate. SOLUTION: First electrodes 22 and Second electrodes 28 are formed in the same plane on a substrate 16 consisting of glass plates, etc. A power source 32 and the switching element 30 for impressing voltage between the respective electrodes are connected to the first electrodes 22 and the second electrodes 28. The liquid crystals disposed between the electrodes are subjected to the orientation treatment and are so treated that the orientation directionγthereof are nearly paralleled with the longitudinal direction of the wire-shaped electrode parts 18 of the first electrodes 22. The alignment treatment is executed by a method of directly rubbing the surface of the first substrate 16 and, besides, by providing the surface of the substrate with aligned films consisting of a polyimide resin, polyamide resin, polyvinyl alcohol, etc. In such a case, the pretilt angleθp of the first substrate 16 is confined to <=1 deg..
