<p>A process for preparing a 1,5-pentanediol derivative of the general formula (I): R1CH2CH=CR2CHO (wherein R?1 and R2¿ represent each independently hydrogen or lower alkyl) by reacting a 2-butenal derivative of the general formula (II): HOCH¿2CHR?1CH2CHR2CH2OH (wherein R?1 and R2¿ are each as defined above) with formaldehyde and hydrogenating the obtained reaction mixture; a 5,6-dihydro-2H-2-pyranol derivative of general formula (III), (wherein R?1 and R2¿ are each as defined above); and a process for preparing a 1,5-pentanediol derivative of the general formula (II) by hydrogenating this pyranol derivative. The 1,5-pentanediol derivative is usable in the fields of coating material, adhesive, ink, fiber, film, synthetic leather, plasticizer, lubricant, elastomer, foam, molding material and so forth as raw material of polyester, polyester polyol, alkyd, polyurethane, reactive monomer and so on, and is useful as raw material for organic synthesis and as wetting agent in itself.</p> |
