The invention relates to an envelope (5) which has a two-ply tear-off strip (6) which can be reliably detached and is formed by two perforated lines (1, 2) made in the lateral region of the envelope during mechanical production. Said envelope with an incorporated letter opening system is suitable for automatic packaging of letters since its external form does not differ from conventional envelopes. Said superimposed perforated lines (1, 2, 3, 4) firstly mean that the envelope is sturdy enough not to open during transportation and secondly, it can be reliably torn open without transverse tears, in particular when thin paper (75g) produced in an environmentally-friendly manner is used.
