To produce blanks of a mineral foam, pref. a closed-pore mineral foam, the premixed materials pass through a two-stage thermal process, followed by shaping together with added water. In the first stage the blanks are preheated. In the second stage, they are further heated and inflated and cooled until they reach shape stability. In both stages, the blank is protected from the direct effects of a flame or other heat source or contact with a heated wall or other heat conductor, by a fine grain material of a different type from the blank material.
