The axis (2) of the spring is curved in the installed position, it being particularly for a torsional-vibration damper in an automotive transmission system. The spring wire (D) is of circular cross-section and profiled where adjacent turns (3) bear against each other when compressed to the maximum amount. The profiled portions or flats (4) are local, and limited to the portion of the spring with minimum radius (r1) when in the installed position. The flats can be provided on both sides of each turn, those on adjacent ones converging towards the innermost side, so that they bear against each other over their entire surface areas, typically including an angle of between 0.5 and 6 deg. They can be formed only on the turns midway along the spring, whereas the wire of the turns at the spring ends is of continuous round section.
