PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove the flicker of a static image, and reduce also the flicker of a dynamic image as occasion demands. SOLUTION: In a device for displaying a pseudo intermediate tone image by error diffusion processing, this device has a display area ratio arithmetic circuit 18 for calculating display area ratio (Sk) on the basis of an input image signal and a luminance characteristic gaining circuit 20 for determining emission luminance characteristic on the basis of the Sk and outputting luminance deviation data to an error diffusion circuit 11. The emission luminance characteristic is renewed without a closed loop returned from the output side to input side of the error diffusion circuit 11 to perform error diffusion, whereby a pseudo profiel by gradation nonconformance is prevented from appearing. Since the Sk is determined from the input image signal, the luminance deviation data inputted to the error diffusion circuit is regularly constant in case of a static image, causing no loop vibration. The sharp change of the luminance deviation data is suppressed by a filter 26 to reduce the flicker of a dynamic image. Since a reversion correcting circuit 22 and a reversion detecting circuit 24 are provided to correct the reversion, no sense of incompatibility is caused by the reversion of emission luminance level. |
