An alteration to the mounting and machining of a plasma torch cathode is provided for enhancing performance and reducing bulk (Figs. 2, 3). The lower end of a cathode holder (2) is machined into a tapered recess having an upside-down frusto-conical shape. The taper machining of the cathode holder (2) may be at an angle of roughly 20 DEG . The tip of the cathode (1) is machined into a taper at one end and straight at the other. The tapered portion of the cathode (1) may be at an angle of 20 DEG . The angle of the cathode (1) must correspond to that of the cathode holder (2). A supporting screw (9) supports the cathode (1) in contact and under pressure in the recess of the cathode holder (2). Said screw (9) may be replaced with any other attachment means such as a flange (10) so that the cathode (1) is supported in contact and under pressure in the recess of the cathode holder (2).
