The control device (6) allows the hydraulic pressure for operating the electrohydraulic clutches (18) for the automatic transmission (2) to be varied, for increasing passenger comfort during gear-changing. The hydraulic pressure is brought to a required value at a rapid rate during a first phase of the gear changing cycle, in response to a control signal, with subsequent switching from the old gear ratio to the new gear ratio and rapid adjustment of the hydraulic pressure, with subsequent pressure regulation, in a final phase.
