The complete sequence of the mammalian protein (A), homologous to the VAT1 protein of Torpedo californica, of about 500 amino acids (aa) is new. Also new are: (1) partial sequences of (A) of any length, beginning at the N-terminus; (2) peptides of 4-16 aa, derived from (A); (3) antibodies (Ab) against conformational epitopes of (A); (4) cDNA sequences encoding (A), of about 1500 bp, optionally modified by exchange of 3 or 6 sequential bases at any site, resulting in a mutation or polymorphism; and (5) cDNA of 12-48 bp encoding peptides of (2) or their mutants or polymorphisms.
