The piston compressor for a refrigeration plant comprises a housing with motor-driven shaft and a piston (34) moved by the shaft in a cylinder (12), the shaft axis being at right angles to the cylinder axis (21). The suctions line of the compressor comprises a separator chamber (53) arranged in the cylinder block, and there is an oil return duct (58) leading from the lowest point of this chamber to the space (56) containing the drive shaft. The chamber may be formed as a segment of an annular space whose axis coincides with the cylinder axis. The bottom (57) of the chamber may be inclined such that, with the cylinder axis in the vertical position, the duct (58) connects with the lowest print of the chamber.
