Stratified charge engine with controlled exhaust gas recirculation

In an engine with manifolds 24 and 34 supplying charge streams containing respectively fuel and no fuel to one cylinder intake valve 14 or respective intake valves (Fig. 5), an exhaust gas recirculation pipe 84 is connected to the manifolds. Mechanically ganged throttle valves 50 and 54 control air and exhaust gas flows to the manifolds and a valve 90 controls the pressure of exhaust gas in the pipe 84 dependant on engine operating conditions and determines the quantity of exhaust gas in the charge flows into the engine cylinders. The charge may enter the cylinders to provide tumble or swirl charge stratification (Figs.2,4 and 6).
