Despite its speed the ship avoids producing propagating gravity waves. The bow is limited at the water surface by two parallel walls (1) so the displaced water must necessarily flow away from under the bow. The wall reaches down below the water level, limiting the flow at the bow ahead of the main beam level, as defined by the water build-up. The rise of the bow plates from 1:3 at the overlap of the side walls amounts to half the draft (t/2). The top overlap of the walls over the waterline limits the roll of water off the sides at high speeds. The bow of the ship should be corrugated or folded so its rearward part provides the specified flow and roll of water or again the bow is designed as several parallel parts, The drive for the ship is provided by a screen-bladed impeller or by a radial pump. The stern is typically streamlined.
