The key has a head (3) and a shaft (5) with an information section (7) with a micromechanical code structure (17). The micromechanical code structure has height differences in the region of 0.1 to 50 mu . The length of the micromechanical code structure is in the range 0.01 to 10 mm. The micromechanical code structure may contain a binary coded structure with only one height difference value or may contain multiple height difference values. A sensing device has a sensing tip which is moved over the information section to detect the code structure.
