The propulsion process is implemented with a vehicle comprising a head (S) and preferably 20-30 segments (A,B etc.) coupled together by arms (11) with toothed sectors (12) pivotable about vertical axes (13). The relative movement is limited e.g. to 20-40 degrees by inflatable cushions between the ends of adjacent segments. The movement is effected by a electric motor and gearing (17) on each segment, with current supplied from a battery (16). It is regulated periodically so that each segment takes up an attitude to the preceding one which reproduces the relative positions of the two preceding elements at the previous stage of the sequence.
