PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst carrier having a shape effect and taking part in a reaction by using tetrapod-shaped zinc oxide whiskers each grown from a base part in different four axial directions as the material of a carrier. CONSTITUTION:Tetrapod-shaped zinc oxide whiskers 1 each composed of a base part and four acicular crystal parts extended three-dimensionally from the base part are used as the material of the carrier of a catalyst used for a vapor or liq. phase reaction. When the whiskers 1 are bonded with powder and the resulting carrier is used, the carrier itself acts especially in a reaction in which oxygen takes part, e.g. a complete oxidation reaction or a selective partial oxidation reaction because zinc oxide has characteristics of a semiconductor. A catalytic substance is supported on the surface of the carrier or the surface is coated with porous silica or alumina. |
