Sulpholene, obtained by the addition of sulphur dioxide to 1,3-butadiene, is purified by treatment with a quaternary ammonium anion exchange resin in order to remove impurities which adversely affect the hydrogenation of the sulpholene to sulpholone. The anion exchange resin is preferably in the form of a salt of an anion of an acid with an ionisation constant less than 10-2 such as carbonic or sulphurous acid. The treatment is preferably conducted in alkanol solution. An example is given, the purified sulpholene being subsequently hydrogenated to sulpholone in the presence of Raney nickel.
