PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a separating membrane excellent in hot water resistance, having moderate water permeability and especially useful as a blood treating membrane by using a PVA polymer contg. a specified amt. of vinyl alcohol units and having a specified block character. SOLUTION: This separating membrane is made of a PVA polymer contg. 50 to <90mol% vinyl alcohol units represented by formula I and vinyl ester units represented by formula II as constituents and having a block character (η) of <=0.6. In the formula II, R1 is H or a hydrocarbon and each of R2 and R3 is a hydrocarbon. The separating membrane is excellent in hot water resistance, has moderate water permeability and is especially useful to treat blood because it is excellent also in permeability and compatibility with blood.
