The present invention is to provide a portable terminal. The portable terminal according to present invention comprises: a micom(20) for extracting and transmitting intrinsic codes stored on a data table in EEPROM(10) responsive to a signal from keypad and for storing a received intrinsic code of another remote controller onto the EEPROM(10); an asynchronous transmitting and receiving means(30) for converting the serial codes from said micom to parallel codes, for transmitting converted parallel codes, for conveting received parallel codes to serial codes and transmitting converted serial code to said micom; an encoding means(40) for encoding data from said asynchronous transmitting and receiving means, so that the data is synchronized with an input clock; an infrared transmitting means(50) for converting the data from said encoding means(40) to an infrared signal and for transmitting the infrared signal; an infrared receiving means(60) for converting an infrared signal from outside to a voltage value corresponding to the infrared signal; an infrared converting means(70) for converting the voltage value from infrared receiving means(60) to data; and a decoding means(80) for decoding the data from said infrared converting means and for transmitting decoded data to said asynchronous transmitting and receiving means. Thereby, the portable terminal can control various products by using a universal remote control imbedded therein.
