A filter block comprises porous filtering elements 2, insert plates 5 and backing plates 6 on a perforated central tube 4, each insert plate being formed with integral ribs 10, 12 projecting from its surface, the outer edges of the ribs defining a concave surface, each backing plate being formed with correspondingly placed integral ribs 11, 13, whose outer edges define a corresponding convex surface, and resilient means, e.g. a coil spring 31, acting on the insert and backing plates, through a slidable pressure member 35, to hold the elements firmly between the plates. The ribs on the insert plates and backing plates define cavities 9 and have gaps 14, 15 respectively formed between them. If an element should disintegrate, the particles which become detached therefrom immediately obstruct the gaps 14, 15 and prevent the further passage of non-purified liquid from that particular part of the filter block, so that untreated liquid is not allowed to pass through to the outlet. Each insert plate and backing plate is respectively provided with an outer frame 21 lipped at 19 and having outlet passages 30, and an inner ring 27 having inlet grooves 28, 29, the plates being formed with serrations 20, 21, 25, 26 and 23, 24 respectively to grip the element. The filter block is supported axially by an end fitting 37 bearing against an abutment member attached to an inlet pipe 38 through which liquid is supplied under pressure and is inserted in a casing 34, perforated at 39, which has a perforated washer 32 and a condenserdeflector 33 attached to the other end. When the filter block is used to separate immiscible liquids, the heavier liquid falls through the perforations in the casing and the lighter liquid passes through small horizontal passages extending through the condenser-deflector, which condense any froth that may form.</p> |
