The termination of acceleration and the braking of a lift cage having a regulated travel prescribed by a nominal valve transmitter are initiated as a function of the speed and of the distance of the cage from the intended stopping point. The switching elements shown indicate a lift at the second stop and it is proposed to move to the third stop. Floor relay contacts 5.3 and 8.3 are therefore closed and the cathodes of thyratrons 16 and 17 receive a positive potential by way of the contact 5.3 and a sliding contact 4.3 scanning a non-linear potentiometer 3 providing a voltage source representative of the position of the lift. A locking relay 9 is excited by way of a collector shoe 6, a sliding contact 7.3 and the relay contact 8.3 which relay switches in the anode voltage for the thyratrons by means of its contact 9.1. The control grids 16.3, 17.3 of the thyratrons are connected to a sliding contact 1.3 which scans a potentiometer 1.2 providing a voltage source corresponding to the speed of the lift. When the lift ascends, a door contact 22 is closed and a control contactor 10 closes its contacts 10.2 causing a setting motor 1.1 to displace the contact 1.3 upwardly whereby the potential at the control grids 16.3, 17.3 becomes more positive; simultaneously the sliding contact 4.3 moves and the potential at the cathodes becomes more negative. When the two potentials have approached to a small difference determined by a potentiometer 20 thyratron 16 fires and a relay 14 is energized whereby contact 14.1 breaks the circuit of contactor 10 causing contacts 10.2 to open and setting motor 1.1 to stop. The acceleration of the lift is thus terminated and it continues at a constant speed. After a short distance the potential tapped by the contact 4.3 has been lowered and the thyratron 17 is caused to strike whereby relay 15 is energized, contact 15.1 closes to energize contactor 11 whose contact 11.2 switches on the setting motor 1.1 in accordance with the retardation of the lift the speed of which is thus reduced to the fine setting travelling speed.
