The indicator panels are spaced at regular intervals along the route, have electroluminescent diode display, and flash at a rate that allows the driver to see successive flashes if he is travelling at the advised speed, determined from an estimation of the safe stopping distance between vehicles, assuming a reaction time of 1.08 second. The rate of flashing is adjusted if the road conditions deteriorate. An automatic detection system monitors the state of the road surface and the visibility, notably detecting the presence of fog. The CMOS electronic circuits can be battery powered or supplied from a distribution line.
