The first holder (5) contains adjacent rows of mountings for the items, which originate from a second one (6) similarly equipped with mountings. The items are selected and transferred dependent on the number of available mountings. From a raw of items in the second holder, the selected items are delivered by a transfer mechanism (7,87) to a first buffer unit. Simultaneously, items selected to fill the empty mountings (13) in the first holder are extracted from the buffer unit and delivered into them. Selected items can be extracted from the first holder, after which it is filled with others from the second holder. Extraction can be by a grab, which delivers to the buffer unit.
