A decorative article consists of a rigid backing layer (2) of plywood, cut to the required shape, which can be covered with a layer of cork (3) and then decorated, with part of the decoration made up of one or more zones of a sculpted synthetic foam, especially polyurethane. The synthetic foam is applied in two layers to the backing after it has first been coated with at least two layers of matt white vinyl paint. The first layer (7) of foam is pressed against the backing layer, and one or more additional layers are applied on top of it, are shaped before drying, and after drying are cut and polished. The finished shapes are coloured with thin coats of spray paint (12), and can have decorations (13) stuck to them.
