The weight of the refuse inside a dustbin (1) being emptied into a dustbin lorry (2) is determined by a method comprising the following steps : (a) the dustbin is placed on a load carrying section (6) connected to a lifting and emptying mechanism (3) on the lorry ; (b) the dustbin begins to be lifted by a lifting device (7) in the mechanism ; (c) the dustbin and its contents are weighed during at least some of the time the dustbin is being lifted ; (d) the dustbin is emptied into the back of the lorry ; (e) the lifting mechanism begins to lower the dustbin ; (f) the empty dustbin is weighed during at least some of the time it is being lowered ; (g) the weighing step is finished ; (h) an indicator calculates the weight of the refuse by taking the difference between the two weight measurements ; (i) the dustbin is completely lowered so that it rests on the ground ; and (j) the dustbin is removed from the lifting and emptying mechanism. Steps (c) and (f) use at least one set of weighing scales (8) to generate measurements which are transmitted as an electric signal to the indicator, until three identical measurements are received in succession, separated by a pre-selected time interval, the recorded value being displayed on the indicator. Movement of the dustbin is halted if a stable measurement is not achieved, in which case the dustbin is weighed whilst standing still. Also claimed are (a) the weighing arrangement used in this method and (b) a lifting and emptying mechanism for a dustbin lorrying. fitted with the weighing mechanism used in steps (c) and (f).
