A method of manufacturing a color filter having a transparent electrode (3) on a transparent substrate (2), and a colored layer formed on the electrode and capable of transmitting light in a specific wavelength region. This manufacturing method comprises the steps of bringing the transparent electrode (3) into contact with a film-forming solution (1) of an electrolyte with dispersed pigment particles; and applying a voltage to electrolyze the solution (1) between the electrode (3) and a submerged electrode (4) so that a colored layer may be formed on the transparent electrodes (3). The contact of the electrode (3) with the solution (3) may be achieved by placing the electrode (3) into or onto the solution (1).
