<p>The Internet is used for both speech and data communication. A terminal is based around a personal computer (1). The terminal also includes a handset (3) which houses a microphone (5), a loudspeaker (7), a card reader (9) and a data encryption circuit for encrypting data read from a card by the card reader (9). The personal computer (1) is programmed to enable speech communication with a remote station using the handset (3) and to transmit encrypted data, read from a card, to the remote station. In another embodiment, the role of the personal computer (1) is taken by a custom base unit.</p> |
