The septic tank consists of a deep base (1) which is open at the top. A cover (2) fits over it and meets the base along a horizontal joint (4). The tank has inlet and outlet (8) pipes. The outlet pipe is situated so that it straddles the joint and its lower inner edge is situated just below the plane of the joint. The outlet pipe is situated mainly in the cover. It has a diameter of 10 cm or more. Its lower edge is situated no more than 2 or 3 cm below the joint.
