The invention relates to catalyst systems suitable for the polymerisation of ethylene and alk-1-enes and containing as active components the following: A) a chromium-containing component obtainable by reduction of an oxidised Phillips catalyst with organic compounds selected from the group comprising the linear C4-C10 or cyclic C3-C10 alkenes with at least one internal C=C double bond, 1,3 butadiene, C2-C10 alkines and C1-C10 aldehydes; and optionally B) an organo-metal compound of an element from the first, second, third or fourth main groups or second subsidiary group of the periodic table.
