A method of relieving pressure in a gas container containing gas under pressure, for example a gas container connected to a nuclear reactor and containing radioactive fission product gas, in which the main part of the gas is transferred to collecting vessels connected to the gas container, is characterized in that the gas container is connected to several collecting vessels with operable and closable connection conduits, and that the gas container is placed in open communication with one collecting vessel at a time and the open communication between the gas container and one collecting vessel is closed after the pressure in the gas container and the collecting vessel has become substantially equal, before the gas container is placed in open communication with another collecting vessel. In the arrangement shown a gas such as hydrogen, deuterium, oxygen or helium is introduced into the steam circuit of a boiling water reactor 1 and passes through condensers 4 and 11 before returning to the gas container 15 and pump 17. The container 15 is connected to a conduit 18 which can communicate through valves 21a-21g and 22a-22g with collecting vessels 19a-19g. If the pressure in container 15 is excessive, for example due to incomplete condensation in condenser 4, or if a leakage occurs in the gas system, the gas in container 15 is transferred to vessels 19a-19g by successively opening and closing valves 21 and 22; the valves may be controlled automatically by pressure sensing means in the container and in the vessels. The last container 19g may initially be at subatmospheric pressure so that the final pressure in. container 15 may be reduced below atmospheric pressure.
