Polymorphic regions of the variable region gene of T-cell receptors can be identified as being associated with particular autoimmune diseases. By detecting the presence of the particular sequence in the host genome, particularly rearranged, or the T-cell receptor expression product, the propensity for the autoimmune disease may be diagnosed. In addition, antibodies or peptides related to the specific sequence may be prepared for use in prophylaxis and therapy.
