A brake pad assembly (10,10') is provided comprising a backing plate (16), a plurality of metal channel members (20) each having side walls (24) upwardly extending from a base (22), the channel members (20) being attached, for example spot welded, to the backing plate (16). Friction material (28,30) is molded onto the backing plate (16) over the channel members (20), whereby the side walls (24) of the channel members (20) are bent inward under the molding pressure to mechanically lock the friction material (28,30) in place on the backing plate (16).
