An endless belt and drum vacuum filter unit comprises a filter drum 13 with annular edge seals 31, means e.g. a motor 14 for rotating the drum, a discharge roller 16 spaced horizontally from the drum, a return roller 20, an endless porous filter belt 23, e.g. of cloth, and relatively parallel tracking elements 39. The elements are disposed along the opposite edges of the belt and each comprises a tubular sheath 40, e.g. of polyethylene, which is secured along one edge of, or forms an integral hem of, the belt, and is normally of the same length as the belt, and a resiliently stretchable core 45, e.g. a coil spring of polyethylene or metal, slidably housed in the sheath and stretched around annularly grooved guide sheaves 35, 361, 37<SP>1</SP> of different effective diameters than the drum, discharge roller and return roller respectively and mounted for rotation coaxially therewith, to provide tensioned supports for the belt. Each sheave 36<SP>1</SP> is free to rotate relatively to the roller 16, as may be the sheaves 35, 37<SP>1</SP> relative to the drum and roller 20 respectively. The discharge roller has one or more helical ribs which cause local protrusions in the belt and crumbling of the filter cake as the belt passes around the roller, especially when the roller is driven at greater peripheral speed than the drum. A belt support 26 is provided. The drum 13 dips into a tank 10 of filtrant and has axial ribs (not shown) dividing its surface into areas, each served by a suction pipe 33. |
