The steering unit has a spring device (11) which is a rubber torsion spring with a rubber element (14) which is vulcanised into place between an outer metal housing (13) and an inner metal sleeve (12). The shaft tube (1) has a fork (4) at the upper end (3) in which the spring is secured by a screw (15). The inner surfaces (7) of the fork shanks (5,6) and the face (26) of the inner sleeve have a toothed formation (28) to provide a counter grip. A step bar (31) for a positioning screw (32) is present on the outer metal housing.
