Identifying material of body to be tested using test body made of harder material

The method uses a test probe (12) which, when pressed with a varying force (F), penetrates with a depth (h) into the body (20) being tested. The resulting measurement values for the penetration depth, hm ess(F), as a function of the force across a force interval, are compared with a family of desired values, hsoll(F,a). The desired values contain a parameter (a) indicating the material of the body being tested, and the material to be identified is assigned that value from (a), with which a min. deviation results between hmess(F) and hsoll(F,a). A testing body (12) is used which tapers to the end facing the material body to be tested.
