The equipment comprises an open system franking unit (5), a link to other computers (105) including a computer controlled restoration of credit unit (120) and an information system for postal codes (191). The open system franking unit (5) is controlled by a general purpose computer (20). The general purpose computer (20) is connected to a digital printer preferably laser (60) which prints postal stamps on to letters and labels (100). An electronic balance (40) may be included and connection to external units is made through a communication line (80) and interface (50). A franking security unit (10) generates encrypted franking stamps.
