The cross-shaft (22) encloses a metal torsion bar (23). This is fixed rigidly at one end (23a) on part of the second rail (6a), seat (2) and seat back bottom part (4) by a mechanical connection (25a). The bar is fixed at the far end (23b) at the second shaft and seat assembly with the bar joined by a second mechanical connection to the operating mechanism. The bar is joined to a second area of the assembly (11,4a,5a) by a third connection (27) dimensioned to break under excessive torque. The control assembly and second connection lock the second bar end fast, using a torsion bar twisting under given torque load. A metal sleeve (24) round the bar (23) is fixed to the bar by first and third mechanical connections (25a,27) and is itself fixed on the second seat assembly (11,4,5) by a fourth connection proof against specified torque.
