A biogas reactor has a housing totally or partially filled with an active biomass, a gas collection chamber for collecting the gasses that bubble up from the fermenting suspension and a gas bubble-poor sedimentation chamber for the sedimentation of active biomass sludge particles. The gas collection chamber and the sedimentation chamber are formed by one or several column-like superimposed partitioning elements having each an overflow edge (8) for the gas bubbling-up into the respective reactor section. A duct with a throttling member for evacuating the gas passes through the gas collection chamber. Each partitioning element is arranged in the reactor housing (5) in such a way that the volume-regulated biogas flows out of the gas collection chamber (7) formed by the partitioning element, over the overflow edge (8) of the partitioning element and into the following reactor zone (6), so that a defined circulating flow (16) can be set in said reactor zone (6).
