The altitude information device uses the vehicle position information obtained from an onboard navigation system on its own or in combination with altitude information provided by an altitude sensor (28), with use of the altitude information for controlling the fuel injection for the automobile engine. The altitude information provided in dependence on the vehicle position data may be compared with the altitude provided by the altitude sensor to provide a plausibility check.
