The durability of synthetic continuous filament yarn, e.g nylon and "Dacra" (Registered Trade Mark), is increased by coating it with an oxidized polyethylene wax. Suitable oxidized polyethylene waxes are those having molecular weights between 1000 and 3000 containing at least 3% of oxygen based on the weight of the oxidized wax and having acid numbers of not more than 50 prepared by subjecting polyethylene/alkanol telomers in the liquid phase to the action of an oxygen containing gas. The oxidized polyethylene wax may be applied to the yarn dissolved in a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. toluene, xylene, naphtha (boiling range 93 DEG -149 DEG C.), trichloroethylene, carbontetrachloride, cyclohexanone and turpentine, or as an aqueous emulsion containing as emulsifiers mixtures of higher fatty acids, e.g. saturated aliphatic acids containing 12-20 carbon atoms, with volatile amines, e.g. morpholine, methoxy propylamine and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, long chain alkyl aryl sulphonates, alkyl aryl polyether alcohols or condensation products of ethylene oxide with long chain aliphatic alcohols, acids, esters, ethers or alkyl phenols, either before or after drawing. After application of the solution or emulsion of the oxidized polyethylene wax the yarn may be heated, e.g. to a temperature above 100 DEG C., to remove the water or other solvent. Emulsions containing 5-20% by weight of the oxidized polyethylene wax are preferably used and 0,05% by weight or more of the wax is preferably applied to the yarn. The oxidized polyethylene wax may be applied to the yarn together with antistatic agents, e.g. alkylphenolethylene oxide condensation products, mineral oils or silicones. The yarns may be made into ropes by laying together a plurality of yarns, e.g. 70-80 or more, in a left hand direction, i.e. with a "S" or left hand "lay" or twist, and plying the desired number of strands, usually 3 or more, to form a rope with a "Z" twist or "right lay". |
