A video recording and playback device for recording codes includes a recording/playback select switch SW11 for selecting one of the outputs of a frequency divider 12, synchronous signal separator 11, control pulse amplifier 15 and frequency divider 20 according to a recording mode/playback mode, a control head select switch SW12 for supplying a control pulse selected by the select switch SW11 to a control head 18 or supplying a control pulse reproduced by the control head 18 to the control pulse amplifier 15 according to the recording mode/playback mode, a key matrix 16 for inputting VCR control commands from a user to a microcomputer 13, a code/normal select switch SW10 for selecting code recording or normal recording state and inputting it to the microcomputer, a control head switch 23 for turning on or off the control head under the control of the microcomputer, and the control head 18 for recording the control pulse on a video tape or reproducing the control pulse recorded on the video tape.
