CYCLOBUTENEDIONE DERIVATIVE, ITS PRODUCTION AND NONLINEAR OPTICAL ELEMENT CONTAINING THE DERIVATIVE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the subject compound useful as a material for a practical organic linear optical element having excellent nonlinear optical effect, chemical and thermal stability and transparency and enabling easy growth and processing of the crystal from dissolved state or molten state. SOLUTION: The objective cyclobutenedione derivative of the formula I ((p) is 1 or 0; E<5> is C or N; D is a substituent having a Hammett substituent constantδ<0> R of <=0; R is group of the formula II) can be produced e.g. by dissolving a cyclobutenedione derivative of the formula III in a solvent such as N,N-dimethylformamide, adding a compound of the formula IV in an amount slightly excess to the cyclobutenedione derivative to the solution together with a palladium complex catalyst and an acid acceptor and reacting the components preferably under heating at 90-120 deg.C.
