PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce an optically active (S)-(Z-alkyl-2-halobenzyl alcohol useful for applications to a raw material for producing (S)-3- alkylphthalides having inhibiting actions on prostaglandin F2αby carrying out the reducing reaction of a specific alkyl (2-halophenyl) ketone with an enzyme. SOLUTION: The reducing reaction of an alkyl (2-halophenyl) ketone represented by formula I (R is a 1-4C alkyl; X is bromine or iodine) (e.g. 2- iodoacetophenone) is carried out with an enzyme such as a baker's yeast or an immobilized baker's yeast to thereby efficiently afford the objective optically active (S)-α-alkyl-2-halobenzyl alcohol represented by formula II. Furthermore, the compound is reacted with carbon monoxide in the presence of a palladium compound (e.g. palladium acetate) and a tertiary phosphine (e.g. triphenylphosphine) and carbonylated and reduced to provide an optically active (S)-3-alkylphthalide represented by formula III. |
