PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate an undesired texture from an output image and to attain smooth and stable gradation reproduction. SOLUTION: A gradation processing means applying gradation processing to a received image signal has an N-value processing means and a phase calculation means calculating and outputting a phase signal in the same pixel, and the phase calculation means is made up of an error arithmetic and phase control means 204. Original data are added to an error sum by an adder 301 and the sum is given to the N-value processing means 303. The N-value processing means 303 compares the sum with a threshold to provide an output of output data subject to N-value processing. The difference between the output data and the output of the adder 301 is outputted as an error. Furthermore, an LSB (1-bit) of the output of the adder 301 is given to the phase calculation means 302, where a print position in the same pixel is calculated and the result is outputted as a phase signal. The image output is made up of output data of the image signal subject to N-value processing and a phase signal. |
