The applicator includes a die which has reservoirs of coating material behind. The coating materials (6,16) are delivered through passages (5,15) opening onto the face of the die. The coating is extruded onto a non-magnetic base material, which is continuously displaced past the face of the die. The two slots allow formation of a double-layer coating. A first extrusion block (7) is positioned clear of the surface of the passing base. A second extrusion block (17) is in contact with the passing base, with the layer just deposited running over the edge of the block. A second outlet has the trailing lip (18) recessed so there is room for a second layer to be deposited on top of the first layer.
