The grinder has a cylindrical wheel (12) driven in rotation, and a chuck (14) carrying the brake pad so its friction surface is turned toward the outer circumference of the wheel. The chuck is displaced in the X direction by a mechanism (16) that moves it perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the wheel and parallel to the friction surface of the brake pad. A second advance mechanism moves the chuck in the Y direction, perpendicular to the friction surface of the brake pad. The movement in both directions is controlled by a suitably programmed numerical controller, which also drives a mechanism that rotates the brake pad about a Z axis perpendicular to the surface of the brake pad.
