The mechanism consists of at least one jaw (6, 7) which is actuated so that it approaches the moving line (1) and interacts with a corresponding member on the opposite side of it to interrupt the line's movement. The jaw moves perpendicular to the direction of the line's travel, and the mechanism can have two jaws moving simultaneously in opposite directions, made with matching shapes and situated on opposite sides of the line, or one jaw can be movable and the other fixed. The jaws can be of various shapes and be actuated by various means, such as electrical, mechanical, magnetic, pyrotechnic or pneumatic. The mechanism can also incorporate a cutter to divide the line after it has been stopped for a set period of time.
