Method of controlling cleaning system of car wash along sides of vehicle

The car wash portal is fitted with light gates (12) to monitor the shape of each side of a vehicle (3) ahead of the cleaning system. The light gates are inclined to match the slope of the vehicle sides and the vehicle profile is stored on-line. The stored data can be used for subsequent sweeps of the portal over the same vehicle. The out of contact sensing system (11) covers the whole width of the vehicle and detects any objects such as wing mirrors. The cleaning systems (6) are aligned with respect to the measured profile, with some of the cleaning systems operating out of contact eg. air/water jets.
