A lamp holder comprises a cover (11) made from insulating material, and at least one contact block (12) which is movably mounted in the cover (11) in opposition to elastic means (13) and projects through an aperture in said cover, and has at least one female plug socket (15). The cover (11) is formed of two pieces, one of these pieces being a shell (30) in the general shape of a pocket which comprises the aperture while the other forms a plug-in unit (31) which is engaged in the shell (30) through the opening (32) thereof. The shell and plug-in unit are held by a snap catch. A plate 65 electrically shorts the contact springs 20. Several contact blocks (12) can be provided in one cover (11) with a common or respective plug-in units. Plural shorting plates 65 can be interconnected in a divisible manner. Application is, in particular, discharge lamps with double-pole lamp caps.
